Training in assertiveness
Assertiveness is the capability of an individual to act adequately self-assertively, "non-aggressively", and interactively in any given situation. Assertiveness is prerequisite to the individual’s possibility and ability to express one’s thoughts, feelings, and needs, as well as one’s ability accept the same from others. Assertive individuals are sensitive to manipulation, recognize it, and are able to fight it effectively. Assertive behavior is adequate, neither passive, nor aggressive. The objective of assertiveness training is to help individuals reach the point of "healthy" self-awareness, learn the art of asserting oneself, be perceptive to one’s own feelings and needs, have confidence in one’s strength and ability to assume responsibility for one’s own actions and oneself, and to make an effort to solve situations. Clients learn to act naturally and express one’s emotions, opinions, and wishes adequately, and to make compromises. The ultimate purpose of assertiveness is open communication and assertive attitude to life.
Training in assertiveness is done in two phases:
- Phase I: eleven 2-hour group sessions; focus on basic assertive techniques.
Phase II: eleven 2-hour group sessions; focus on application of the basic techniques in concrete social situations (social relations, parents- -children, partner relations, etc.).
Assertiveness training is offered exclusively to clients of Psychocentrum Jihlava - manželská and rodinná poradna, using a group session method with psychotherapeutic elements.
